Re-Creation: “Disdainful You Fly Me”

A favorite piece performed by Charlotte Melmoth at concerts. From the opera Artaxerxes by Thomas Arne.

“Disdainful, You Fly Me”

Mrs. Charlotte Melmoth sang this particular song in concerts–one of the few operatic pieces she performed.

“Disdainful You Fly Me”

Disdainful You Fly me, in anger exclaim, exclaim

Charlotte Melmoth

All comfort deny me and murther my fame;

No grief can the heart to pity incline,

That bears not a part in sorrow like mine,

Nature’s tender plea in vain

Welcome then my chains again,

My chains again, my chains again, my chains again.

O Rigor unjust, O Counsel accurst,

ambition ill plac’d my Virtue disgrac’d,

The Pains I endure Death only can cure,

The Pains I endure, Death only can cure

The pains I endure, Death only can cure,

The Pains I endure Death only can cure.

Disdainful you fly me, in anger exclaim, exclaim,

all comfort deny me and murther my Fame

No Grief can the heart to pity incline,

that bears not a part i sorrow like mine,

Nature’s tender plea is vain,

Welcome then my chains again,

My chains again, my chains again.
